MoonHood’s eerie claymation adventure The Midnight Walk is finally getting a physical edition for PS5 and PlayStation VR2, marking the game’s first boxed release since its digital debut earlier this year. The retail version is being published by Pix’n Love, with pre-orders opening on December 2, though the company has not yet announced an exact shipping date. A reversible cover is confirmed, and a newly revealed Collector’s Edition will also be offered, but full contents have not been detailed as the store listing is still pending.

The game’s digital release happened in May this year with optional PCVR and PSVR2 support as it quickly garnered popularity for its aesthetics and dark-fantasy feels. The Midnight Walk is set in a clay made world where the burnt one awakens from his grave. As he starts his journey through the haunted arena, he finds Potboy, the lantern who becomes his survival tool and companion. Storytelling gets the front seat with several chapters, combining various forms of games including light-based puzzles, undercover encounters, and exploration.

Players using PS5 can expect a smoother performance and strong lighting effects that enhance the overall ambiance. Those using PS VR2 get a more immersive experience, where they get the ability to head-track and amplify the audio to understand the narrow paths and shifting shadows better. The game also employs VR-specific interactions where players get to perform various different actions including leaning around corners, focusing on audio effects, and the ability to scan dark spaces for threats and hostile creatures.

Since light sources and effects are one of the major parts of the gameplay, its management is a highlight too. The Midnight Walk has matches, torches, candles and environmental puzzles that often require strategic use of Potboy’s glow. Another highlight is the  “close your eyes mode,” shifting the world’s perception and revealing hidden paths or weakening hostile creatures. Critics believe that the puzzles could be deeper but what wins is the game’s emotional weight, art direction, and focus on storytelling which earned it a 4/5 score from several outlets.

With the physical edition on the way, collectors and VR players will soon have a new way to experience one of the year’s most unusual atmospheric adventures. Pre-orders go live December 2 on Pix’n Love’s website, while the digital version remains available now on PS5 and Steam.
